Classic & Heirloom Quilts: Streak of Lightning Mini

Classic & Heirloom Quilts - Lightening Mini patchwork by Angie Wilson of www.gnomeangel.com. Quilted by Raylee Bielenberg of Sunflower Quilting. Fabric: Cotton Forrest by Rosalie Dekker for Ella Blue Fabrics. Quilted with Aurifil.

Classic & Heirloom Quilts by Betsy Chutchian is not the first book you’d think would be in my collection if you’re a follower of my work, but you’d be wrong because I really dig this book of quilts. There’s 8 quilt patterns in this book and they’re all inspired by 1800’s era quilts, which is something I really love. I’m such a sucker for an antique pattern and I had such a blast making a version of one of the mini’s in a fabric collection I would not normally use. It was a wonderful experience all round.

Ella Blue were so generous and sent me Rosalie Dekker’s Cotton Forrest collection to have fun with and when I saw this book of quilts I knew they’d be a match made in heaven. Cotton Forrest is a linen/cotton blend and it’s sublime to work with. It presses so well and feels so lovely when you’re working with it.

I had the whole book to choose from and I picked this mini quilt based on a log cabin block. I thought about using all the fabrics in the line but in the end decided to go with the creams and reds, with a pop of blue. When I was cutting them out I was a little worried it wouldn’t work, but as the blocks started coming together I fell head-over-heels.

I accidentally inverted the colour placement and ended up with two dark streaks of lightning instead of two light streaks and it’s such a happy accident. This little quilt packs such a punch and I adore it. It’s totally not a quilt that I ever thought I would make, but I’m so happy I did. It rocks.

Raylee of Sunflower Quilting quilted this lovely one for me and did some free form meandering feathers in Aurifil 2000 in 50wt. The thread just sinks into the linen/cotton blend and creates a lovely texture. I bound the quilt with one of the three stripes in the Cotton Forrest collection and it’s a perfect binding stripe.

I backed the quilt in a mix of fabric from the collection that I didn’t use but couldn’t let sit in my stash not being stroked and admired.
