The Good Life; the original self sufficient urban dream…

One of the reasons we decided to sell our townhouse and move into a house was because we had a dream of becoming a little more self sufficient. (Well, it’ll probably be more like piss farting around in the backyard then any sort of River Cottage!) We both wanted to have a veggie patch and a couple of chooks (I would like a cow as well but HUBBY says there’s just no room! Dream killer!).

We’ve talked a lot about how we see it all working out and we’ve spent a number of hours walking around our yard trying to plan out how we’d use the space.  (I clearly demonstrated the space available to house Daisy, but HUBBY still doesn’t see it!)  We’ve talked about what plants we’d like to grow and what we’d do with them.

But that’s all we’ve done… talk. Until last week! It was very exciting – HUBBY used his Christmas Bunnings vouchers and got us a (drum roll) WORM FARM!Our Worm Cafe

…the classy way to compost – I didn’t know there was any other way!…

(and yes, that’s half woman half worm!)

That’s right, we’re now worm farmers. It’s all very… dirty. Seriously, they live in filth! (I don’t know why my Mum always said I was a little piggy when my room was messy, would have been more accurate to say I was a little worm!)

We’re now recycling our kitchen waste into our worm farm. (I refuse to call it a “worm cafe“; I ain’t no stinking worm barista!) It’s been a little confusing at first – they do like potato, but not onion. They like banana but not orange.  They’re only vegetarians.  It’s all very demanding.

The day we got the worm farm we thought it would be fun to introduce the Little Man to gardening so he and I watched as HUBBY put the worm farm together.

Building the worm cafe

…not as many allen keys needed as with Ikea…

It went together really easily (which is somewhat disappointing as I do enjoy watching HUBBY struggle to assemble stuff, in the same way he enjoys watching me try to reverse parallel park!).

Little Man in his Bumbo

…you got me out of the house for this?…

George watches the events from behind bars

…even George wanted to be involved…

Who knew putting together a worm farm could draw such a crowd!

I was really impressed with how well the farm went together and it seems really sturdy. HUBBY had picked up all the supplies to set the worms up that day so once the cafe was assembled he got down to working out how to give our worms the best possible environment.

Reading the instructions - his fall back position

…when all else fails, read the box…

The farm was up and running within 15 minutes. I’m thoroughly impressed and secretly hope the rest of our gardening adventure goes as smoothly!

We’ve been putting scraps in there for the past week and the worms seem to be thriving.  HUBBY seems to enjoy going out there once a day and talking to them.  (I wonder if he’s given them all names yet!)

I can’t wait till we harvest our first lot of worm juice! I know it’s not much when I think about all the gardening things we want to do, but it’s a start and I can’t wait to get more things happening. No pressure, but I’m really hoping this is the good life…

Can’t say I’m a jealous person, but I would love a worm farm. I hate throwing away all the food scraps that I do and keep thinking they could be put to much better use. Problem is I don’t have much of a garden where I live. I would love to do the whole raised garden bed thing. You are inspiring me. Good luck with your gardening.

You should totally check these out in Bunnings – they’re really compact so you could have them on a balcony or in a courtyard – they’re as wide as a wheelie bin. It’s amazing how much scraps you can accumulate in a couple of days.

Me too! Was always on the ABC when I got home from school and did my homework. I’m going to see if I can find it on DVD – might be time to educate the Little Man!
