HOUSE QUILT BLOCK SWAP NOW OPEN

I have been crushing on the house quilt blocks that Grace (@chainofdaisies) has been swapping with various quilty types. Grace was kind enough to make me a gnome for a wonderful little lady that has come into our world and as a thank you I said I would make a house block for Grace.

I have long admired the work of Cat (from Cat and Vee) and so I decided to take some inspiration from the work she does and try my hand at making my own little house quilt block to swap.

I had so much fun making this block that I started dreaming of my own house quilt made of little houses so I spent some time looking at house quilts on Pinterest and dreaming of house blocks I could make.

I just fell in love with some of the amazing house quilt block quilts out there. So many variations and so many cool “houses”.

I’ve had such a great time being a part of the Aussie Modern Instabee that I decided I’d open up a swap for those interested in exchanging house quilt blocks.

And so the House Quilt Block Swap was born…

What to Swap

You’ll be swapping 2 x 6.5″ House Quilt Blocks with 3 partners. This means you will need to make 6 blocks to swap and you will receive 6 blocks in return.

The blocks will have a white background. Any white will do but it must be as white as possible – Kona White is a good one to use. If you’re in doubt contact your partners to check with them about the fabric you’re wanting to use.

The block measures 6.5″ with at least 1″ border of negative space around your house and any other items you’ve included in the block.

The house is to be no taller than 4″ tall. The house can be no wider than 4.5″ wide. You can use all the space within the 4.5″ square to make your house and add anything to it that you like – for example trees or fussy cut embellishments.

The above diagram gives you an idea of how the block would work. The blue represents the 1″ border of negative space (there’s nothing but white fabric in this part of the block) and the white represents the 4.5″ of space for your house and embellishments (for example in the block I made above the fire hydrant and mushroom would be classed as embellishments).

Please do not use beads, embroidery or any other form of embellishment on the quilt unless you have contacted your swap partner and asked if they would be ok with it.

Give unto Others

It should go without saying, but just so we’re clear: only swap material that you would be happy to receive and use in a quilt yourself. This means swapping quilting quality material (preferably cotton). Using a mix of pattern and colour that you think your partner would like. (Obviously this one is a little subjective, so again if you’d be happy to use it swap it – if in doubt probably best to either contact the person you’re swapping with to see if they’d like it or maybe keep it for yourself (and your own house quilt!).)

Communication is Key

I understand that life sometimes throws you a curve ball and means that you can’t always do what you would like, so if for any reason you have to pull out of the swap just drop me (and if you’re so inclined) your partners an email to let me know and we’ll work around it. The more warning you can give the better so that I can redirect packages, etc.

Time is Money

Please post your House Quilt Blocks to your swap partner by the postage date specified. If you’re anything like me just knowing that something is coming in the mail is uber exciting, so it would be great if all our packages arrive around the same time so that we can all celebrate together.

Quilt Karma

Ultimately a swap like this is only as good as what you put in to it so please remember to treat everyone as you would expect to be treated. Chances are if you shaft someone today, you’ll be shafted tomorrow.

Timeframe

Swap is open for registration from today until 27 June. You will have until 18 July to get your house blocks in the post.

  3. Do the houses have to be pieced or can they be appliqued? I’m looking forward to swapping.

    1. Hi Sue – great question – I would ask your partners what they would prefer. I, personally, don’t have a problem with either but the swap was set up for pieced so you’ll need to confirm with the people who will be receiving them. Let me know if you have any issues. 🙂

  11. Count me in, for both. I always wanted to make a housequilt and this swap sounds to be a very good reason to finally do it. 12 blocks will make a nice wallhanging.

      1. Angie, you are a real optimist in wanting to make a town! 😉
        I have a question: can I ask my swappers not to use white as a background for my blocks, but white-on-white, ivory, cream, a white/creamy blender, you get the idea. It’s just that I never liked pure white in a quilt and rather have a variety of creamy whites, I find that more interesting. I will of course use white in my blocks if the other swappers prefer it, I have no problem with that.

        1. Hi Hilly – you can totally ask them, however as they joined a swap that said “white” background they may not want to. But ask, I’ve always found people really good. If you have any problems let me know 🙂

  18. thanks so much for the mention Angie, that’s so lovely of you! Just signed up for the international swap – it was so quick and easy to do, since I was already on Swap Bot! These houses will be so sweet and tiny, I might try and work up a basic pattern to follow and then get fussy-cutting in the school holidays. My block for The Wee Bee was a house too, so I might work them all in together and make a bigger mini than originally planned 🙂

      1. Well I haven’t heard back from Swap-bot my issue is ‘The following errors occurred while trying to register:
        ◾The mailing address you entered is already in use with another Swap-bot account. Swap-bot does not allow more than one account per address. Use the ‘Contact Admin’ link above to discuss exceptions.
        but I’ve spoken to the daughter and she is going to delete her account haha. You can only have one account per address!! Too bad if you’re family is into different things! Anyway I should hopefully be signed up today 🙂 Thanks.
