It has been so cold here in Canberra in the last week it’s not funny. We’ve lived in Canberra ten years next year and in all that time I can’t remember it being this cold this early in the year. It’s nuts.
On the weekend we drove down to Bermagui to catch up with family and friends. (Bermagui is a seaside town in New South Wales.) It was great to get away for the weekend and especially great to catch up with COUSIN and LEE LEE. Not to mention the haul we managed to get from the garage sales and secondhand shops! (Oh how I miss scavenger hunting with COUSIN!) The weather was awesome. The days were so clear and blue but cold… oh my, they were cold!
On the drive home we drove over Brown Mountain. Half way up it started to rain, only the rain went in crazy directions. HUBBY and I spent a few minutes trying to work out whether it was rain, snow or sleet. Turns out it was snow! Snow! The Australian bush is so stunning normally but it takes on such a magical quality when it’s covered in snow.
We hadn’t seen snow since we were in the UK in 2008. Admittedly it’s a different kind of snow but it’s still magical. I hope I never tire of seeing snow.
However when it comes to day-to-day living I prefer my temperature to be around a barmy 22ºC. So my mind has turned to heating of our home. While I do love the efficiency and lack of complexity that comes with central heating I think it would be nice to have a fireplace. Somewhere to hang the Christmas stockings, a place to display family treasures and the ability to do Mary Poppin songs.
We have a fire pit for our outdoor entertaining area and I think I could spend hours starring into the flames and burning stuff (like marshmallows). I think I would like the same experience only indoors. Although I do worry about burning the house down. I’m clutzy so I don’t think a fireplace would be the safest thing for me… but I guess that’s where HUBBY would come in handy.
