CRAFTY | DAY OF QUILTING

On Saturday I went to the February Brown Owls meeting and had the opportunity to catch up with a great bunch of crafty Canberra ladies.  The theme for the day was felt but I have a crochet project that I’ve been working on so I took that instead because I was looking for some motivational inspiration.  I didn’t get much done on my project but Sunday morning when I woke up I had the motivation I was looking for. Just a shame it was for quilting and not that crochet project.

But really, I’m not complaining I’ve been so excited to get started on the Line Art Quilt that I just couldn’t wait to get started.

I’ve never worked with a jelly roll so it was a new experience to have all the pieces already cut.  I just had to cut the strips of the dotty fabric that I am using as my background fabric.  In my head I thought I knew how it would work out but really until I started making the cuts and then assembling it I was riding by the seat of my pants.

I cut a few strips and then laid them out to try and get an idea of how it would look.  What I saw gave me a quiet hope that my idea wasn’t completely nuts.  With a confidence boost I went ahead and started sewing the solid colour strips together with the dotty strips.

It was quite the little production line as I just ran one strip after another through the machine.  Then I had to iron them all flat and start again on the other side.

Once all the strips were sewn together and ironed I started to test the placement of the strips on the top of the dinner table.  It’s at about this point that I got a little bit excited about how the finished product may look.

I started the slow process of pinning, sewing and ironing strips together.  I sewed a couple of strips together before breaking for lunch.

After lunch I continued to pin, sew and iron.  By the time I finished I had sewn together just under half of the quilt top.

I’m really loving how it’s all coming together.  I was hoping to have it done in one day but my back just wasn’t up to the task.  Which is ok because it means that I get to play some more.

I’m hoping that the black, white, grey jelly roll turns up this week.  I’m really excited to see how the rainbow stripe fabric looks together with the monotone jelly roll.

I’m not sure how big the end product will be as I’ve been winging it and not really paying attention to measurements.  I’m hoping that it will be big enough to cover our queen sized bed when I’m done.  But I’m not convinced.  I think it’s going to end up a rectangle.  In the end it doesn’t really matter because it’s not like we’ll be using it solely as our bedding, just something to add some colour to the room.

I can’t wait to get some more done on it in the evenings… that’s if I can keep my eyes open after work!

Don’t forget to go over and check out Michelle’s (Buttontree Lane) version of our line art quilt.  It’s amazing and completely different to how mine is coming together.  I love it!

    That looks amazing!

  2. That is going to look fab! You’re so crafty.

  3. It’s looking fabulous, Angie! I still can’t get over what a genius idea you had using those dots. It just looks SO GOOD.

How are you trimming your ends? The pattern say to draw a line on quilt on your design wall but I think that’s a stupid idea, mainly because drawing anything straight on a vertical surface is near on impossible! I was going to cut the ends after it was all finished.

Can’t wait to see your progress!

    • I was thinking that I’m going to take the cowards way out when it comes to the ends. I was going to get the machine quilter to do it for me. I’m just worried that I’ll trim them, get it wrong and then not be able to match the front and back or something just as horrid. Figured safer and easier to leave it to an expert…

  4. It looks AMAZING! I can’t wait to see the finished quilt. And covet it. Because I already do.

  5. Wow, that’s stunning. I love the effect of the dotted fabric fading away towards the end of each row. It’s going to be a gorgeous quilt!

    • Thank you. I wasn’t sure how it would all work out when I picked the fabric, but I’m so happy with it. I can’t wait to see it all done.. just a matter of making the time now! :)

  6. That looks amazing, so beautifully colorful! February Brown Owls sounds interesting. I wish I were more of a crafter, but nevertheless it’s great to come across a fellow Canberran blogger! So glad I found your blog, looking forward to reading about more of your adventures!

    • Hi Vanisha! Brown Owls is a great little group, if you’re into learning new crafts, perfecting existing skills or just having a great gab you should totally check it out. You can find more information here.

Such a small world. I love finding Canberra bloggers; we’re such a rare breed of wonderful. ;)

Excellent. now I want to go out and buy a couple of jelly-rolls! you’re such an Ideas Girl!!

I admit – when I first saw the dots material – all I could think about was a cheap faux leopard print or something (you know, how the dots along the backline are close together…) I thought that maybe your pregnancy has messed with your “Ideas Girl” capabilities. But seeing what you’ve done with it here, it’s Genius!

    looking forward to seeing me!

(ps. at the risk of being a little presumptuous, do we get to see your bump? huh? huh??)

    • Seriously, there’s a whole world of jelly roll quilting out there that I had *no* idea about. I’m totally going to do some more research and look into what else can be done with them. The fact that they’re precut is fabulous!

Gotta admit I was a little worried about how the dots would translate as well, but I’m pleasantly surprised. Now I’m concerned with how the rainbow stripe material is going to look! Pregnancy is messing with my sleep more than anything else.

      Me too! ;)

Ha! I have no bump. I have a spare tire that I’m more than happy to show off. Actually, I probably should get a few snapshots in before it’s all over; I just hate having my photo taken… Oh, I could do a Demi Moore pregnancy photo shoot – that would be awesome! Ha!

er…seeing *more*. not me. I see enough of me…. ;-)
