OH CANADA

HUBBY and I have been talking lately about life after IVF. As much as we enjoy daydreaming about the IVF working we also enjoy daydreaming about the things we could do if we weren’t to have children. I hate to admit it but sometimes I enjoy these daydreams more than the children centered ones… mainly because they don’t involve poo filled nappies, late night scream fest and having a teenager I love and adore tell me I’m ruining their lives.
Anyway, back to the daydreams. Lately we’ve been talking about packing up and moving to Canada. Here’s our rationale (in no particular order):
- They’re members of the Commonwealth
- They have a great health care system
- The Canadian economy is in better shape than the US economy
- Sarah Richardson lives and works there
- Supernatural films there
- It’s close to the United States so we can do road trips
- They have moose, chipmunks and beavers
- We can take the dogs with us
- They have snow (lots of snow!)
- It’s full of Canadians
- I could learn French
I’m sure there’s other reasons that would make Canada a great choice, but I can’t think of them right now.
The biggest downside would be the massive distance between us and our families. It’s hard enough now when it’s only a 3 hour flight between us. But I like to dream that they’d come to visit and we’d be able to visit too.
I’ve always been impressed by people that move continents. I get stressed just moving suburbs. I don’t even know where to begin when it comes to organising moving countries.
For a start, what do you do with all your stuff? Do you sell stuff off, put it in storage or take it with you? Do you sell the house you have in your originating country or do you keep it as a backup plan? How do you get a job overseas? So many questions, but I’d love coming up with a solution. Guess I’ll just have to wait to see what the future holds.
I would so be a very frequent visitor if you moved to Canada!

I have nothing helpful to add, but OMG I LOVE SARAH! (almost as much as Tommy! haha)
My favourites are the ones where she is doing her own place – sarah’s house or beach house or whatev.

Did you see the series where she did her Summer House and it was on the rocky outcrop that they had to fly to by seaplane? I still dream about that house. I love all of her stuff. When I dream of my big lotto win it involves getting her to style our home. *le sigh*
My family almost moved to Canada when I was five. We were all set to go, passports the lot, when my mum chickened out so we didnt go. I’ve always felt drawn to it and would choose it for all the reasons you’ve listed plus more. I like Canadians. I don’t know I’ve ever met one I didn’t like.
But you’re right – huge logistical issues!
We might be moving to the US in a few years for my partner’s career reasons, so yes, freaked out about the whole logistics of it even if it is a bit exciting.
If you get any good advice about getting a job, moving, storing your stuff etc will you let me know? I have the same questions. 🙂
After spending a Spring in Canada and being the coldest I’ve ever been I don’t think I’d survive a winter there. Winters in the US are fine, Winters in Canada…you can keep ’em!
