Yesterday Sam and I watched the rover landing on Mars. (When I say Sam watched it I mean he was asleep on my chest as I watched it.) I’m not a big space nerd but there’s something really special about seeing humans achieve greatness.
Watching the NASA control room was amazing. To see all these people coming together to make something happen and then to see them celebrate when it worked was really special. It makes me wonder what other great things we could achieve if we all worked together instead of against each other.
As I was watching I was thinking about how much Sam will get to see in his lifetime. I spend a lot of time thinking about the things he won’t see (like a cassette tape, an old school television, MC Hammer…) but I don’t take enough time to imagine the things he will see. It’s quite possible that in his lifetime he will see a person land on Mars. He may even get to travel into space himself. Who knows, he may even get to see us put a rover on another planet. Or even stranger still see another planet put a rover on Earth!
Whenever I look at him I’m struck by how much potential he has within him. It’s something we all have. Some of us choose to use it to further the human race, whether it be through science, sport, art, music, politics or entertainment, some of us choose to waste it. I hope that as he grows he gets to see more things like the Mars landing and get inspired to do something great himself.
Whatever his choices I’m glad we got to spend this momentous occasion together, even if he was asleep for it.

What you wrote could just as well came from my mind. My cousins little man makes me think about these things too. Just thinking about what my grandmother has seen in her lifetime, what i have seen so far in mine, i can only wonder about what else is possible in this universe.
